When General Gordon of Khartoum visited in 1881 he returned to London claiming he had found the original site of the Garden of Eden – specifically, the Unesco World Heritage-listed Vallée de Mai on the island of Praslin, where a prehistoric palm forest shelters the legendary coco de mer. 

This gorgeous UNESCO-listed prehistoric palm forest is the only place in the Seychelles is one of only two places in the world where the rare coco de mer palm grows in its natural state (the other being nearby Curieuse Island).

Kids will gawk at their man-size leaves and giggle at their bottom-shaped coconuts, which are the largest seeds in the plant kingdom. Remember to keep an eye out for tree frogs, tiger chameleons and the black parrot — one of the world’s rarest birds and only found here.
