About Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls used to be one of Africa’s most famous game parks, but the 1960s poaching and onwards led to the decimation of wild animal number in the park.

But, recently Murchison is beginning to regain its former glory and now the 3,895 square kilometer park boasts over 70 species of mammals, including 4 of Africa’s Big 5 animals and over 450 species of bird and stunning scenery. Murchison Falls National Park is named after the dramatic Murchison Falls, (the world’s strongest waterfall), which in turn were christened by explorer Sir Samuel Baker. Baker named the falls after the geologist Roderick Murchison, the president of the Royal Geographical Society in the 1860s.

Notable visitors to the park include Winston Churchill, Theodore Roosevelt, Ernest Hemingway and several British royals. The 1951 film The African Queen starring Humphrey Bogart was filmed on park’s Lake Albert and River Nile.
