Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda's largest and oldest protected area, and it is where most first-time Uganda safari tours begin. The park takes its name from the most powerful waterfall on earth — a point where the entire River Nile is forced through a seven-metre gorge before exploding into the valley below in a wall of white water and mist. It is one of Africa's great natural spectacles, and the boat cruise from Paraa to the base of the falls is among the finest wildlife experiences the continent offers.

The landscape shifts from open savannah and acacia woodland to dense riverine forest, supporting elephants, giraffes, lions, leopards, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, hartebeests, and oribis. Chimpanzees inhabit the Budongo Forest on the park's southern edge. Over 450 bird species have been recorded here, including the rare shoebill stork — one of the most sought-after birds in East Africa.

02 Kibale Forest National Park

No Uganda safari tour is complete without time in Kibale Forest National Park — the primate capital of Africa. The park harbours over 1,450 endangered chimpanzees, the highest density of wild chimps anywhere on earth, along with 12 other primate species including red colobus, L'Hoest's monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and olive baboons. Walking through Kibale at dawn, surrounded by calls from a dozen primate species, is an experience with no equivalent in African wildlife travel.

Chimpanzee habituation work at Kibale has been ongoing since 1994, producing encounter success rates consistently above 90%. The forest also records over 335 bird species, several of which are found nowhere else in Uganda. Most western circuit Uganda safari tours use Kibale as the midpoint between Murchison Falls to the north and Queen Elizabeth or Bwindi to the south — and it deserves more than a rushed half-day.

03 Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda's most ecologically diverse protected area and one of the finest all-round safari destinations in East Africa. Meltwater from the Rwenzori Mountains feeds Lake Edward, Lake George, and the Kazinga Channel — creating wetland habitats of extraordinary richness alongside open savannahs roamed by lions, leopards, elephants, hyenas, Uganda kobs, and topis.

The park's single most famous attraction is the tree-climbing lions of Ishasha, found in the southern sector where fig trees provide an elevated hunting advantage unlike anywhere else in Uganda. The Kazinga Channel boat safari is the best wildlife cruise in the country — two hours drifting past hippos, buffalo herds coming to drink, crocodiles, elephants wading, and an astonishing 600-plus bird species. 04 Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi is the crown jewel of Uganda safari tours and one of the most important wildlife destinations on earth. This ancient, mist-wrapped rainforest in southwestern Uganda is home to over 459 mountain gorillas — more than half the entire global population. With 27 habituated gorilla families across four trekking sectors (Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo, and Rushaga), Bwindi offers more gorilla encounters than anywhere else in the world, and no two treks are ever the same.

The gorilla trekking experience itself is a guided full-day hike through dense jungle terrain — the walk to the gorillas can take anywhere from 30 minutes to seven hours. When you find a family, you have one hour in their presence. Gorillas weigh up to 200 kilograms and can be encountered at arm's length. It is, for most visitors, the most powerful wildlife experience of their lives.

Beyond gorillas, Bwindi records 346 bird species with 90% of Albertine Rift endemics represented — making it a destination of global significance for serious birders. The park sits adjacent to communities of Batwa, Bakiga, and Bafumbira people whose cultural experiences add meaningful depth to any extended visit.

05 Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo Valley National Park is Uganda's most remote and arguably its most spectacular park — a vast, rugged wilderness in the northeastern corner of the country, bordering South Sudan and Kenya. Those willing to make the journey are rewarded with something rarely found in East Africa today: a genuinely wild, uncrowded safari experience with some of the continent's most unusual wildlife. Kidepo hosts over 77 mammal species and 475 bird species, including cheetahs, caracals, bat-eared foxes, greater kudus, ostriches, and Burchell's zebras — species found nowhere else in Uganda's national parks.

The Narus Valley, with its permanent water sources, concentrates wildlife dramatically during the dry season. Lions, elephants, buffaloes, and giraffes are reliable sightings. The park's isolation has preserved an atmosphere of untamed Africa that the more accessible southern parks, for all their riches, cannot quite replicate. Scheduled flights from Entebbe to Apoka airstrip (approximately 90 minutes) make Kidepo far more accessible than its road distance suggests.

06 Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo is compact, accessible, and consistently underestimated — which is exactly what makes it such a rewarding stop on Uganda safari tours heading south from Kampala to Bwindi. It is the only park in Uganda where Plains zebras, impalas, and elands can be found, giving it a distinctly East African savannah character that contrasts beautifully with the forest parks of the west.

More importantly, Lake Mburo is the only Ugandan national park where walking safaris inside active wildlife zones are officially permitted. Tracking animals on foot — following a ranger through acacia woodland as zebras scatter ahead and hippos grunt from the lake — is a thrill that no vehicle safari can replicate. 07 Semuliki National Park

Semuliki is Uganda's most biologically unusual park — the only protected area in the country composed entirely of lowland tropical rainforest, an extension of the vast Congo Basin ecosystem. Its flora, fauna, and birdlife reflect this, with species found nowhere else in Uganda or East Africa. Over 441 bird species have been recorded here, including Congo serpent eagle, black dwarf hornbill, and Nkulengu rail — making Semuliki one of the finest forest birding sites on the continent.

The Sempaya Hot Springs are the park's most visited attraction — a guided walk through dense forest leading to two geothermal vents where water bubbles at boiling temperatures. 08 Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga is Uganda's smallest national park and one of its most dramatic — a volcanic highland sanctuary on the triple border of Uganda, Rwanda, and DR Congo. Three Virunga volcanoes rise from the park's landscape: Sabinyo, Muhabura, and Gahinga. One habituated gorilla family — the Nyakagezi group — is available for trekking, making Mgahinga a quieter, more intimate alternative to Bwindi for visitors seeking a genuinely uncrowded mountain gorilla experience.

Golden monkey tracking is Mgahinga's second great primate offering — a 2 to 4-hour guided search through bamboo zones for these brilliantly coloured and energetic primates, studied here by researchers. 09 Rwenzori Mountains National Park

The Rwenzori Mountains — the fabled Mountains of the Moon — are one of Africa's most extraordinary landscapes and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rising to 5,109 metres at Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley, the Rwenzoris are snow-capped year-round and feed the watersheds that nourish Lake Edward, Lake George, and the rivers of western Uganda. The montane forest zones host chimpanzees, L'Hoest's monkeys, forest elephants, and 217 recorded bird species including the striking Rwenzori turaco.

Multi-day trekking expeditions to the summit range from 7 to 12 days and rank among the most challenging and rewarding mountain experiences in Africa. Shorter day hikes and nature walks at lower altitudes are available for those not attempting the peaks — and visits to Ruboni Village, near the park entrance, offer rich cultural interaction with the Bakonzo community. 10 Jinja — The Adventure Capital of East Africa

Jinja is where Uganda safari tours often begin or end — and it deserves far more attention than a single transition night. Sitting on the northern shores of Lake Victoria at the point where the Nile begins its 6,650 km journey to the Mediterranean, Jinja is East Africa's undisputed adventure capital. The town's stretch of the Nile features Class III to V white-water rapids that draw rafters from across the world.
