Your complete destination guide to Uganda safari tours — national parks, permit costs, sample itineraries, and expert booking advice
Uganda is Africa's most underrated safari destination — and that reputation is changing fast. Wedged between the great lakes and the Congo Basin, this small, intensely green country packs a wildlife portfolio that few destinations on the continent can match. You can track mountain gorillas in mist-draped rainforest, watch 1,500 chimpanzees in the world's most productive primate forest, spot tree-climbing lions on open savannah, and cruise past hippo-laden river banks — all within a single week of Uganda safari tours that connect seamlessly across the country's western circuit.
This guide is built for travellers planning their first Uganda safari and experienced wildlife enthusiasts looking to go deeper. We cover all ten national parks and key destinations, explain what makes each one worth visiting, outline permit costs, and close with two sample itineraries and a pricing guide. Read it from start to finish, or jump to the destination that interests you most.
01 Murchison Falls National Park
Size3,893 km²Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda's largest and oldest protected area, and it is where most first-time Uganda safari tours begin. The park takes its name from the most powerful waterfall on earth — a point where the entire River Nile is forced through a seven-metre gorge before exploding into the valley below in a wall of white water and mist. It is one of Africa's great natural spectacles, and the boat cruise from Paraa to the base of the falls is among the finest wildlife experiences the continent offers.
The landscape shifts from open savannah and acacia woodland to dense riverine forest, supporting elephants, giraffes, lions, leopards, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, hartebeests, and oribis. Chimpanzees inhabit the Budongo Forest on the park's southern edge. Over 450 bird species have been recorded here, including the rare shoebill stork — one of the most sought-after birds in East Africa.
Top Activities
- Nile River cruise — the 17 km boat ride from Paraa to the base of Murchison Falls, past hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and extraordinary birdlife
- Game drives in the northern sector around Paraa and the Albertine Delta for lions, giraffes, and large elephant herds
- Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo Forest — best combined with a Murchison falls game drive on a 3 Day Murchison Falls Safari
- Top of the falls walk — a short hike to stand directly above the churning gorge
- Birding tours targeting shoebills, bee-eaters, kingfishers, and Palearctic migrants
Pro tip: Stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on your drive from Kampala to track Uganda's only wild white rhinos on foot — and tick the Big 5 before you even reach the park gates.
02 Kibale Forest National Park
No Uganda safari tour is complete without time in Kibale Forest National Park — the primate capital of Africa. The park harbours over 1,450 endangered chimpanzees, the highest density of wild chimps anywhere on earth, along with 12 other primate species including red colobus, L'Hoest's monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and olive baboons. Walking through Kibale at dawn, surrounded by calls from a dozen primate species, is an experience with no equivalent in African wildlife travel.
Chimpanzee habituation work at Kibale has been ongoing since 1994, producing encounter success rates consistently above 90%. The forest also records over 335 bird species, several of which are found nowhere else in Uganda. Most western circuit Uganda safari tours use Kibale as the midpoint between Murchison Falls to the north and Queen Elizabeth or Bwindi to the south — and it deserves more than a rushed half-day.
Top Activities
- Chimpanzee trekking from Kanyanchu headquarters — 2 to 4 hours of tracking, one hour in the presence of the chimps
- Chimpanzee habituation experience — a full-day dawn-to-dusk immersion with a semi-habituated community
- Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary walk — a community-managed trail through papyrus swamp with outstanding birding and additional primate sightings
- Night forest walks to spot bushbabies and other nocturnal species
03 Queen Elizabeth National Park
Size1,978 km²Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda's most ecologically diverse protected area and one of the finest all-round safari destinations in East Africa. Meltwater from the Rwenzori Mountains feeds Lake Edward, Lake George, and the Kazinga Channel — creating wetland habitats of extraordinary richness alongside open savannahs roamed by lions, leopards, elephants, hyenas, Uganda kobs, and topis.
The park's single most famous attraction is the tree-climbing lions of Ishasha, found in the southern sector where fig trees provide an elevated hunting advantage unlike anywhere else in Uganda. The Kazinga Channel boat safari is the best wildlife cruise in the country — two hours drifting past hippos, buffalo herds coming to drink, crocodiles, elephants wading, and an astonishing 600-plus bird species. Queen Elizabeth also contains Kyambura Gorge — the Valley of Apes — where a habituated chimpanzee community can be tracked through a dramatic 100-metre-deep forest canyon.
Top Activities
- Kazinga Channel cruise — Uganda's finest boat safari, exceptional for hippos, elephants, and waterbirds
- Game drives in Kasenyi Plains and the Mweya Peninsula for lions, leopards, buffaloes, and Uganda kobs
- Ishasha game drives in the southern sector for the park's famous tree-climbing lions
- Kyambura Gorge chimp trek — a dramatic descent into the Valley of Apes
- Birding safaris across savannah, wetland, and forest habitats recording 600-plus species
04 Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi is the crown jewel of Uganda safari tours and one of the most important wildlife destinations on earth. This ancient, mist-wrapped rainforest in southwestern Uganda is home to over 459 mountain gorillas — more than half the entire global population. With 27 habituated gorilla families across four trekking sectors (Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo, and Rushaga), Bwindi offers more gorilla encounters than anywhere else in the world, and no two treks are ever the same.
The gorilla trekking experience itself is a guided full-day hike through dense jungle terrain — the walk to the gorillas can take anywhere from 30 minutes to seven hours. When you find a family, you have one hour in their presence. Gorillas weigh up to 200 kilograms and can be encountered at arm's length. It is, for most visitors, the most powerful wildlife experience of their lives.
Beyond gorillas, Bwindi records 346 bird species with 90% of Albertine Rift endemics represented — making it a destination of global significance for serious birders. The park sits adjacent to communities of Batwa, Bakiga, and Bafumbira people whose cultural experiences add meaningful depth to any extended visit.
Top Activities
- Mountain gorilla trekking — the centrepiece of any Uganda safari, available year-round across four sectors
- Gorilla habituation experience — spend four hours with a semi-habituated gorilla family alongside researchers ($1,500 USD, rising to $1,800 in 2027)
- Birding walks targeting African green broadbill, Shelley's crimsonwing, and other Albertine endemics
- Batwa cultural trail — an immersive guided walk with the forest's ancestral inhabitants
Gorilla Permit Cost: $800 USD per person for foreign non-residents (current rate). Permits must be booked months in advance for peak season. Contact Tulambule to secure your dates — we handle all UWA bookings directly.
05 Kidepo Valley National Park
Kidepo Valley National Park is Uganda's most remote and arguably its most spectacular park — a vast, rugged wilderness in the northeastern corner of the country, bordering South Sudan and Kenya. Those willing to make the journey are rewarded with something rarely found in East Africa today: a genuinely wild, uncrowded safari experience with some of the continent's most unusual wildlife. Kidepo hosts over 77 mammal species and 475 bird species, including cheetahs, caracals, bat-eared foxes, greater kudus, ostriches, and Burchell's zebras — species found nowhere else in Uganda's national parks.
The Narus Valley, with its permanent water sources, concentrates wildlife dramatically during the dry season. Lions, elephants, buffaloes, and giraffes are reliable sightings. The park's isolation has preserved an atmosphere of untamed Africa that the more accessible southern parks, for all their riches, cannot quite replicate. Scheduled flights from Entebbe to Apoka airstrip (approximately 90 minutes) make Kidepo far more accessible than its road distance suggests.
Top Activities
- Game drives in Narus and Kidepo valleys — exceptional for predators, large herds, and rare northern species
- Cultural visits to Karamojong manyattas for pastoral traditions, cattle culture, and crafts
- Hiking to Mount Morungole and visits to the Ik people, Uganda's smallest ethnic group
- Kanangorok Hot Springs near the South Sudan border
- Birding for Karamoja Apalis, Verreaux's Eagle, Secretary Bird, and ostrich
06 Lake Mburo National Park
Lake Mburo is compact, accessible, and consistently underestimated — which is exactly what makes it such a rewarding stop on Uganda safari tours heading south from Kampala to Bwindi. It is the only park in Uganda where Plains zebras, impalas, and elands can be found, giving it a distinctly East African savannah character that contrasts beautifully with the forest parks of the west.
More importantly, Lake Mburo is the only Ugandan national park where walking safaris inside active wildlife zones are officially permitted. Tracking animals on foot — following a ranger through acacia woodland as zebras scatter ahead and hippos grunt from the lake — is a thrill that no vehicle safari can replicate. The lake itself supports hippos, crocodiles, and over 350 bird species including the distinctive shoebill and papyrus gonoleks. See our full Uganda wildlife safaris guide for a comparison of all Uganda's major parks.
Top Activities
- Walking safari — the park's signature experience, guided inside active wildlife areas
- Game drives through acacia grasslands for zebras, elands, reedbucks, and buffaloes
- Boat rides on Lake Mburo for hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds
- Horseback safaris — a unique way to approach wildlife in the open woodland
- Birding at Rwonyo and the salt lick for papyrus specialists and raptors
07 Semuliki National Park
Semuliki is Uganda's most biologically unusual park — the only protected area in the country composed entirely of lowland tropical rainforest, an extension of the vast Congo Basin ecosystem. Its flora, fauna, and birdlife reflect this, with species found nowhere else in Uganda or East Africa. Over 441 bird species have been recorded here, including Congo serpent eagle, black dwarf hornbill, and Nkulengu rail — making Semuliki one of the finest forest birding sites on the continent.
The Sempaya Hot Springs are the park's most visited attraction — a guided walk through dense forest leading to two geothermal vents where water bubbles at boiling temperatures. The tradition of cooking eggs or plantains in the steam is an experience travellers consistently describe as memorable. Semuliki pairs naturally with Kibale Forest on Uganda safari tours based around western Uganda's forest circuit. For a full overview of Uganda's top wildlife attractions, our destination guide covers all 40 highlights.
Top Activities
- Sempaya Hot Springs hike — guided forest trail to the Male and Female hot springs
- Forest birding expeditions targeting Congo Basin endemics
- Wildlife observation walks for red-tailed monkeys, pygmy antelopes, and forest elephants
- Cultural encounters with the Bamba and Bakonjo communities
08 Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Mgahinga is Uganda's smallest national park and one of its most dramatic — a volcanic highland sanctuary on the triple border of Uganda, Rwanda, and DR Congo. Three Virunga volcanoes rise from the park's landscape: Sabinyo, Muhabura, and Gahinga. One habituated gorilla family — the Nyakagezi group — is available for trekking, making Mgahinga a quieter, more intimate alternative to Bwindi for visitors seeking a genuinely uncrowded mountain gorilla experience.
Golden monkey tracking is Mgahinga's second great primate offering — a 2 to 4-hour guided search through bamboo zones for these brilliantly coloured and energetic primates, studied here by researchers. The park is also the ancestral homeland of the Batwa pygmies, whose cultural trail through the park's forests is one of the most authentic indigenous experiences available anywhere in East Africa. Combine Mgahinga with Lake Bunyonyi, just a short drive away, for a perfect southwestern Uganda finale.
Top Activities
- Mountain gorilla trekking — one habituated family, intimate group sizes, quieter than Bwindi
- Golden monkey tracking — an exclusive highlight through Mgahinga's bamboo zones
- Volcano hiking — summits of Sabinyo, Muhabura, or Gahinga for panoramic Virunga views
- Batwa Cultural Trail — a guided walk through forest survival traditions and spiritual practices
09 Rwenzori Mountains National Park
The Rwenzori Mountains — the fabled Mountains of the Moon — are one of Africa's most extraordinary landscapes and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rising to 5,109 metres at Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley, the Rwenzoris are snow-capped year-round and feed the watersheds that nourish Lake Edward, Lake George, and the rivers of western Uganda. The montane forest zones host chimpanzees, L'Hoest's monkeys, forest elephants, and 217 recorded bird species including the striking Rwenzori turaco.
Multi-day trekking expeditions to the summit range from 7 to 12 days and rank among the most challenging and rewarding mountain experiences in Africa. Shorter day hikes and nature walks at lower altitudes are available for those not attempting the peaks — and visits to Ruboni Village, near the park entrance, offer rich cultural interaction with the Bakonzo community. The Rwenzoris are best added to Uganda adventure safari itineraries that also include Kibale Forest and Queen Elizabeth, all connected by the western circuit road.
Top Activities
- Multi-day summit treks via Sasa, Sipi, or Piswa trails (7–12 days)
- Day hikes through montane forest with waterfalls and Rwenzori panoramas
- Birding for Rwenzori turaco, sunbirds, and African wood owl
- Ruboni Village cultural visit with the Bakonzo community
10 Jinja — The Adventure Capital of East Africa
Jinja is where Uganda safari tours often begin or end — and it deserves far more attention than a single transition night. Sitting on the northern shores of Lake Victoria at the point where the Nile begins its 6,650 km journey to the Mediterranean, Jinja is East Africa's undisputed adventure capital. The town's stretch of the Nile features Class III to V white-water rapids that draw rafters from across the world. Bungee jumping from a 44-metre platform directly above the river, zip-lining through Mabira Forest's canopy, quad biking through riverside villages, and guided kayaking excursions are all available within minutes of the town centre.
The Source of the Nile itself — marked by the Speke Monument and a Gandhi Memorial — is a historically fascinating boat trip or walking tour that deserves an hour of any visitor's time. Jinja also offers excellent birding along the Nile's wetland margins and an increasingly sophisticated restaurant and accommodation scene that makes it an ideal two-night stop between Entebbe and Uganda's western circuit parks. See our Uganda adventure safari guide for the full Jinja activity breakdown.
Top Activities
- White-water rafting — Class III to V rapids on the Nile, suitable for all experience levels
- Bungee jumping from the 44-metre Nile platform
- Source of the Nile boat tour — history, scenery, and birding combined
- Quad biking and horseback riding through riverside countryside
- Mabira Forest zip-lining en route between Jinja and Kampala

Practical Information for Uganda Safari Tours
Best Time to Visit
Uganda is a year-round destination. The two dry seasons — June to September and December to February — offer the best road conditions, thinner forest undergrowth (easier wildlife spotting), and firm trekking trails. These are peak months for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking and require advance permit booking of three to six months.
The green seasons (March–May and October–November) bring lush landscapes, exceptional birding, fewer crowds, and lower permit costs at some locations. Trails can be muddy but the forest is at its most beautiful. UWA's low-season discount reduces Kibale chimpanzee permits to $200 USD in April, May, and November 2026.
Getting There
All international flights arrive at Entebbe International Airport, 40 km from Kampala. Direct services operate from London, Amsterdam, Dubai, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, and Kigali. Domestic charter flights connect Entebbe to Kidepo (Apoka), Bwindi (Kihihi or Kisoro), and Murchison Falls (Pakuba or Chobe) — cutting long overland drives significantly for time-limited travellers.
Visas and Health
Most nationalities require a visa, obtainable online at Uganda's e-visa portal before travel. Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended. Altitude varies from 600 metres (Jinja) to over 5,000 metres (Rwenzoris) — pack accordingly for mountain itineraries.
