This 10 days Kenya study tour, Nairobi – Mombasa study tour is a regional tour that takes you for an Educational tour to Kenya – one of the east African countries using either Malaba or Busia border.

The tour will concentrate within Nairobi city and Mombasa coast.

Nairobi is the capital and largest city of Kenya. It was founded in 1899 by colonial authorities in British East Africa, as a rail depot on the Uganda – Kenya railway. The city was originally part of an uninhabited swamp probably explaining why the city is commonly referred to as “The Green City in the Sun”.

Mombasa on the other hand is a coastal city in south eastern Kenya along the Indian Ocean. It was the first capital of the British East Africa, before Nairobi was elevated to capital city status.

It is now the capital of Mombasa County. It is known as “the white and blue city” in Kenya, and it’s the country’s oldest and second largest city after Nairobi.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer from School to Nairobi

Depending on location of your school, the learners will be picked by a team of our professional tour guides.

After a meet and greet session, the journey to Nairobi through Busia border will start. You will set off early enough and arrive at the border by sunrise just in time for breakfast.

You will go through the immigration process where learners and accompanying staff will be expected to present their passports and yellow fever vaccination certificates.

Those without passports will apply for temporary travel document at a fee.

Depending on the time taken on immigration clearances, you will continue your journey to Nairobi with a stopover for lunch either in Kisumu or Kericho.

You will drive through Kericho tea estate as learners are given key educative lectures about this mighty tea estate by our onboard guides. You will arrive in Nairobi in late evening, checked in your booked accommodation facility for supper and overnight.

Day 2: Visit Kenyatta International Convention Centre, Kenyan Parliament and Nairobi National Museum.

Kenyatta International Convention Centre

After breakfast you will introduce yourself to Nairobi life with a visit to Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).

KICC is a tall beautiful building of 28-storeys, built in 1974. This magnificent building is visibly sighted from all corners of Nairobi as it’s located in the city center.

It is considered a symbol of Nairobi serving as an international venue for major conferences, seminars, exhibitions, meetings as well as special events including international summits.

On the courtyard of KICC, is a huge statue of Jomo Kenyatta – the first president of Kenya in a sitting posture which adds to the beauty of the Centre.

The building has a magnificent roof top which gives visitors an opportunity to catch a breathtaking panoramic view of Nairobi city.

Kenyan Parliament

Walk across the road to the Kenyan Parliament which is just a stone throw away.

The Kenyan parliament is divided into 2 houses namely – National Assembly and Senate. Of the two houses none is upper or lower as the constitution which was promulgated in 2010 did not define this.

The National Assembly comprises of 350 members (1 speaker, 290 elected MPs, 47 elected women representatives and 12 Nominated MPs).

While the Senate comprises of 68 members (1 speaker, 47 elected Senators, 16 Nominated Senators, 2 Nominated Senators – male and female as youth representatives, and 2 Nominated Senators – male and female as representatives for PWD).

The National Assembly looks into issues of national interest mainly Budget and Security while the Senate looks into issues affecting devolution.

In dissolved system of Government, there are two types of Governments namely; National Government – headed by President and County Government – headed by Governor.

Nairobi National Museum

After lunch, you will head to Nairobi National Museum which is the flagship brand of the National Museums of Kenya located on Museum Hill, approximately 10 minutes’ drive from Nairobi city central business district.

The museum aims to interpret Kenya’s rich Heritage with four distinctive themes representing Kenya’s Culture, Nature, History and Contemporary Art hence it offers a one stop Center for visitors to sample the country’s rich heritage both for education and leisure.

In addition to the museum, visitors are treated to a variety of shopping and eating facilities, as well as botanical gardens that offer a serene environment.

The Nairobi Snake park founded in 1961 as a research facility and popular attraction adds to the Nairobi National museum itinerary.

The snake park exists to educate visitors on the importance of snakes in our ecosystems and the potential dangers of snakebite, and how to avoid them.

The snake park has over 20 different snake species, an aquarium and crocodiles among other reptiles and amphibians.

Some of the various snake species found here include; African Rock Python, Puff Adder, Black Mambas, Green Mambas, Milk Snakes, Boom slang, Jameson’s Mamba and Kenya Sand Boa among others.

Later retire back to your accommodation facility for supper and overnight

Day 3: Visit Wilson Airport, Nairobi Giraffe Centre and Bomas of Kenya

Wilson Airport

After breakfast, you will visit Wilson airport found in Nairobi County.

It lies about 4km by road south of Nairobi central business district.

The airport was established as Nairobi West Aerodrome in 1927 by a wealthy widow called Florence Kerr Wilson.

It was founded in Dagoretti but later re-located to current location on Langata edge road in 1928. It serves domestic traffic and mostly used by general aviation traffic.

The airport’s average traffic is around 120,000 landings and take-offs annually.

Air Kenya and other small airlines use Wilson Airport for scheduled domestic passenger services instead of JKIA.

It has flights to many regional airports in Kenya with common domestic destinations from Wilson Airport to Kisumu International Airport, Mombasa international Airport and Eldoret International Airport.

Nairobi Giraffe Centre

After visit Wilson Airport, you will tour Nairobi Giraffe Centre located about 20km from Nairobi city center.

It was established in 1979 under the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW) which plays a pivotal role in conserving the critically endangered Rothschild giraffe.

AFEW opened this Centre as a collection center, a nature sanctuary for visiting including wildlife conservation education for urban school children.

The center has since then had a huge success, resulting in the introduction of several breeding pairs of Rothschild Giraffe into Kenyan national parks.

The main attraction for both school children and visitors is the hand feeding of giraffes from a raised wooden structure (giraffe height).

You can also watch Warthogs snuffling at their hooves, scavenging on the fallen pellets.

Once you are done with feeding of giraffes, you can head out on a self-guided forest/nature walk in the adjacent Gogo river sanctuary, a 1.5 km trail with great views of Nairobi city and Ngong hill.

Bomas of Kenya

After lunch you’ll visit Bomas of Kenya which is a tourist village in Langata – Nairobi on Forest edge road about 10km from Nairobi City Centre.

It was established by the Government of Kenya in 1971 with the overall mandate to preserve, maintain and promote the rich and diverse cultural values of various ethnic groups of Kenya and to act as a tourist attraction Centre.

Bomas of Kenya preserves the authenticity of Kenya’s cultural values and portrays them in their purest form. The word Bomas was derived from “Boma” which is Swahili word for an enclosed homestead.

There are currently different “Bomas” representing each of Kenya’s major ethnic communities with numerous huts displaying traditional villages belonging to the several Kenyan tribes.

Each “Boma” in this cultural village was built using traditional specifications of myriad Kenyan tribes like the Kikuyu, Luhya, Kalenjin, Taita and Maasai.

You’ll watch the traditional dances representing the various ethnic communities of Kenya before having a tour of the different “Bomas”.

Later retreat back to your accommodation facility for supper and overnight.

Day 4: Game Drive in Nairobi National park and visit to the Resurrection Gardens

Nairobi National park

After breakfast, you will head to Nairobi National park for an early morning game drive believed to be more rewarding than any other time of the day.

Known as “The world’s only Wildlife Capital”, Nairobi National park is Kenya’s first game reserve, established in 1946.

It is a short drive out of Nairobi central business district located about 8km south of Nairobi on Lang’ata edge road.

Wide open grass plains and backdrop of the Nairobi city scrapers, scattered acacia bush play host to a wide variety of wildlife including the endangered black rhino, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, buffaloes, giraffes and diverse bird life with over 400 species recorded.

It is home to over 100 mammals with four of the big 5 present.

Resurrection garden

After lunch, you will visit the resurrection garden which is a place of prayer located south west of Nairobi about 1km off Dagoretti road.

It was opened to the public by his Eminence Maurice Michael Cardinal Otunga on 05th June 1994.

The resurrection garden was established purposely to help Christians rediscover the roots of their faith in order to draw new inspiration and courage in serving God.

The garden is painted with beautiful pictures in different stations showing the history of salvation – the birth of Jesus, his ministry and one that ends up with the way of the cross.

It is a circular journey that takes you round and you later on come to the big chapel inside the garden.

Adjacent to the chapel is the chapel wherein lies the remains of the servant of God -Maurice Michael Cardinal Otunga.

Day 5: Travel to Mombasa by Standard Gauge Railway (SGR). Visit Pirates Beach

After an early morning breakfast, you will be dropped off at Syokimau Nairobi terminus on time for the 8:00 am train schedule and have a transfer to Mombasa by the Madaraka Express passenger train arriving the Mombasa terminus at 2:00 pm.

Have lunch before being transferred to pirates beach for your first introduction to coastal life.

Pirates beach also known as Kenyatta public beach is found in Bamburi along Mombasa – Malindi highway about 8 kilometers from Mombasa central business district.

Over looked by several beautiful beach resorts, lots of activities await you at pirates beach including sun bathing, boat rides, photography, Carmel rides and swimming among others.

Later you will retire to your booked accommodation facility for supper and overnight.

Day 6: Visit Rabai Mpya in the morning and Haller Park in the afternoon.

Rabai

After breakfast your first experience of coast life begins with a visit to Rabai also called Rabai Mpya.

It is a historic location situated about 25km north-west of Mombasa, off the Mombasa – Nairobi highway along the Mazeras – Kaloleni road in Kilifi County.

The Rabia museum also referred to as Krapf memorial museum was officially opened on June 1998 in memory of Krapt and to honor his work in the area.

It was also founded so as to give formal and a perpetual reminder to monumental events during the advent of early missionaries.

Today this place represents the mixture of the history of Christianity, Slavery and the Mijikenda culture whose evidence is still in the place.

The Rabai festival is an annual event held in November to celebrate the history, life and culture of the Rabai and their small town.

Haller Park

After lunch you will head to Haller Park situated in the North Coast of Mombasa south of the Bamburi Cement factory along Mombasa – Malindi highway.

This is an ecological park that is as a result of transformation of a quarry wasteland into a park full of diverse varieties of plants and animals.

What was once a limestone quarry is now a thriving ecosystem of forest, grassland and ponds with walking trails for you to view the fenced wildlife such as hippo, giraffe, antelope, buffalo, humongous tortoises and smaller mammals.

The park also has a number of bird species like the eagle, sandpiper, weaver, kingfisher, ibis, owl, heron, egret and much more.

The sections of the park include the game sanctuary, reptile park, fish farm, crocodile pens, giraffe viewing point and palm gardens.

Enjoy the twisting and winding nature trails and have the opportunity to feed the hippos and giraffes.

Later retire to your booked accommodation facility for supper and overnight

Day 7: Visit to Fort Jesus, experience the Likoni Ferry and afternoon visit to mamba village

Fort Jesus

After breakfast you will start the day with a morning visit to Fort Jesus.

Fort Jesus is a fort in Mombasa town. It was built by Portuguese towards the end of the 16th century between 1593 to 1596 on the coastline near Old Mombasa town.

After the Portuguese inhabited it, the fort became the subject of battle between 1631 and 1895, it was captured and recaptured, changing hands nine times with the Oman Arabs winning control over it in 1698.

In 1895 the British transformed it into a prison in which they held slaves in the torture rooms and cells in the inner part of the fort.

There were also Cannons to protect the interior from invasion and dissatisfied locals. After recapturing it, the Portuguese refurbished it and has since been refurbished a number of times with its structures revealing Portuguese, Arab and English influences.

In 1958, it was declared a national park, and in 2011 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and highlighted as one of the most outstanding and well-preserved examples of 16th century Portuguese military fortifications.

Likoni Ferry

Leave Fort Jesus and connect to have an experience of the Likoni Ferry which is a ferry service across the Kilindini harbor, servicing the Kenyan city of Mombasa between the Mombasa island side and the mainland suburb of Likoni.

Two-Four double-ended ferries alternate across the harbor, carrying both road and foot traffic.

You will have the experience of being on the ferry with breathtaking views of Mombasa Port seen from a close range.

Mamba village

After lunch, you will head to Mamba Village located about 12 kilometers north of Kenyan coastal town of Mombasa, in the up market Nyali area, Mombasa – Kenya.

Mamba village Centre is the largest crocodile farm in Africa and is home to over 10,000 crocodiles. It is also home to BIG DADDY which is known as the oldest crocodile.

Mamba village center combines farming, conservation and environmentally friendly quarry with a good view of selection of the most interesting members of the animal kingdom in their natural habitat.

Your tour of the farm will begin with a video presentation as an introduction to many reptile species, life cycle and behavior of crocodiles.

This is followed by a comprehensive tour of the rest of the farm as you learn more about the crocodile life cycle and behavior while viewing lives of crocodile of every size, starting from hatchlings to fully grown adults.

Some of the crocodile’s displays are labeled with the description of age, length and weight.

The tour of the farm always ends with the highlight of the day, spectacular scenes of blood-thirsty crocodiles where the giants fight for meat during the feeding session which is done daily at 5:00pm.

Other interesting activities to look out for while at Mamba village center for both visiting school groups and tourists include horse rides, tour of the well maintained gardens and aquariums featuring a variety of colorful species like orchids among others.

Inside the Mamba village compound is also a kids park with lots of games and rides where learners can soak in immerse fun after the crocodile farm tour before finally retiring back to their accommodation facility for supper and overnight.

Day 8: Visit Wild Waters for a half day full packed activities. Spend the afternoon at leisure with options for shopping.

Wild Waters

After breakfast, you will head to wild waters situated in Nyali, Mombasa on links road for half day fun full packed activities and experience the beautiful coastal sunshine at wild waters.

Wild waters is a family entertainment park that boasts a range of fun with its exhilarating slides, games, rides and pool for all ages.

Wild Waters blends the thrill of an amusement park with the refreshing cool of a water park.

Thus it’s a family-themed, fun-filled, adrenaline rush and all-you-can-do-with-water kind of place.

The park features a full day of fun for school groups of all ages – whether one opts to take a thrilling plunge down the waterslides, or just relax and float around the lazy river.

It is a place that assures something for everyone.

Shopping options

After lunch, you will spend the rest of the afternoon at leisure with shopping options in one of the supermarkets as well as at Marikiti market for those with interest in purchasing some souvenirs especially the staff.

Later you will retire back to your accommodation for your last supper and overnight in this hot coastal town of Mombasa.

Day 9: Transfer from Mombasa to Nairobi

On this day you will have a relaxed breakfast before being transferred to Nairobi by road.

You will go through Tsavo east and Tsavo west national parks as you catch a glimpse of Zebras that commonly graze by the road side enroute to Nairobi.

Lunch break will be at Tsavo before continuing your journey and arriving Nairobi in the evening. Supper and overnight at the respective booked accommodation facility

Day 10: Transfer from Nairobi back to school

Leave Nairobi before sun rise back to Kampala, breakfast will be taken enroute in Nakuru.

Arrive at Busia border by 2:00pm, clear with immigrations to confirm exit from Kenya.

Have lunch at Busia border before continuing your journey to school and arriving late evening.
